Turkey – United States Political and Economic Relations
Turkish-American relations have developed since the end of the 18th century through maritime trade in the Turkish ports of the Mediterranean and started first relationship between the Ottoman Empire and the United States. The diplomatic relations between the US and the Republic of Turkey is made through an exchange of notes on February 11, 1927. The relations expanded and deepened rapidly after World War II.
There is intense relationship and visitation traffic at all levels between Turkey and USA. During our bilateral relations, the deployment of weapons of mass destruction with Ukraine, Russia, Cyprus, Libya, Yemen, Egypt, Iran, Caucasus and NATO, as well as the fight against terrorism, developments in Syria and Iraq, PKK and DEAS threats, issues and energy security were covered.
After the Korean War and Turkey are members of NATO on 18 February 1952 between the United States and NATO framework plan in intensive bilateral defence / security cooperation is continuing. At the same time, the United States is our main import and export partner in the defence industry.
After the July 15 coup attempt, a very precise turn was made in our relations with the United States. In this context, fighting against the activities of FETO, which is behind the coup attempt, and the leaders of the organization’s leaders came to the forefront in the bilateral agenda.
Minister made a visit to Washington from 17-20 January 2017 and participated in the events related to the swearing ceremony of US President Donald Trump.
US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson made a day-long visit to my country on March 30 and Mr. President of the Republic of Turkey visited Washington on 15-16 May 2017 as the invitation of US President Donald Trump. Minister welcomed US Secretary of State Tillerson, who visited our country during the 22nd World Petroleum Congress held in Istanbul, on 9 July 2017 at a workshop. Tillerson was also accepted by the President of the Republic of Turkey on the same date.
Mr. President of the United Nations met with US President Trump in New York on September 21, 2017, within the frame of the 72nd General Assembly.
Mrs Prime made a visit to Washington and New York on 7-10 November 2017 to be in talks with US Vice President Mike Pence.
Minister held a bilateral meeting with US Secretary of State Tillerson in the margin of NATO Foreign Ministers Meeting in Brussels on 6 December 2017.
In the context of our parliamentary relations with the United States, Former Chairman Boehner visited our country in April 2014. Former President of the Turkish Parliament Mr. Cemil Cicek made a visit to the USA between 23-27 March 2015. Turkey Friendship Group in the number of members of Congress site is 139.
Over the past 10 years, our trading volume with the US has grown by more than 1.5 quadrillion. In the first 11 months of 2017, our exports to the US reached $ 7.2 billion (previous year $ 6.6 billion). Our country’s exports to the US generally tend to increase. Imports from the US in the first 11 months of 2017 amounted to $ 10.8 billion (compared to $ 9.8 billion a year earlier). In our country, 1,702 companies with US capital operate.
In 2016, 459,493 US tourists visited our country.
Turkish Airlines has direct flights to New York, Washington, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Houston, San Francisco, Miami and Atlanta in the United States.
