Turkey – Turkmenistan Political Relations
Turkey, on October 27, 1991, which declared its independence after the collapse of the USSR and Turkmenistan is the first country that opened its first embassy in Ashgabat. Our country supports the neutrality status of Turkmenistan.
There are special relations between two sister countries and peoples sharing common history, language, religion and culture based on balanced, mutual respect and cooperation on the basis of “One Nation, Two States”. The Turkmen side describes the associations as “bone brotherhood”. Cooperation between the two countries is on a positive track in every field, especially in foreign policy, trade and economy, culture and education.
- Our President Mr. Abdullah Gül made a visit to Turkmenistan in April 2014 on the occasion of the Feast of the Feathers. In June 2014, President of Turkmenistan Gurbangulu Berdimuhamedov made an official visit to Ankara and visited the Turkish Council IV. He participated in the summit meeting. Berdimuhamedov participated in the oath ceremony of the President of Turkey in August 2014.
President made his first official visit to Turkmenistan as a President on November 6-7, 2014. Turkmenistan President Berdimuhamedov will be on March 3-4, 2015 to attend the 6th International Turkmenistan Investment Forum and to hold official contacts. Visited our country to attend an official meeting on April 24, 2015, and finally on August 7, to participate in activities organized by the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli Campaign. With the participation of the President of the Republic of Turkey in the “Politics of Neutrality: International Cooperation for Peace, Security and Development” conference held in Ashgabat on December 12, 2015, with the 20th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s neutrality,
Economic relations between Turkey and Turkmenistan are also important. In 2016, our exports to Turkmenistan amounted to USD 125 billion and our imports amounted to USD 422 million. Turkish businessmen have contributed to the development of Turkmenistan since the first days of independence. About 600 Turkish companies are registered in Turkmenistan. In recent years Turkmenistan has become the country where Turkish contracting firms have the most projects in Central Asia. Since the independence of Turkmenistan, the number of undertakings undertaken by firms has exceeded 1400 and the total project cost has exceeded 47 50 billion dollars. Another area where Turkish firms operate extensively apart from the construction sector is the textile sector.
Closer relations between Turkey and Turkmenistan are available in the humanitarian field. Our nation, which is approaching 10 people living in Turkmenistan, constitutes a significant bridge between the two brothers. Every year, many Turkmen citizens come to my country for tourism or trade, and thousands of Turkmen students are studying in our country. Turkmen number of visitors coming to Turkey has reached 165 thousand in 2016, the first ten months of 2017 was visited by over 191 thousand citizens of Turkmenistan our country.
