Turkey – Nigeria Relations

Our country, which won independence from England in 1960, was the embassy of Lagos in Nigeria in that period in August 1962. Our embassy moved to Abuja, which was declared the capital city in 1991,

Political relations between the two countries are good. There is close cooperation between our country, OIC and D-8 Group, and Nigeria, in the framework of international organizations.

Our bilateral relations have been the turning point of 2010. The President of the Republic Mr. Abdullah Gül visited Nigeria in July 2010 with the attendance of the D-8 Summit and at the same time he made a bilateral official visit. This visit is the first visit to our country from Nigeria to the Presidential level.

Period Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan along with the 10 Ministers in February 2011, 5 and State Governor visited Turkey a delegation consisting of senior executives.

Transitional Nigerian Foreign Minister Aminu Bashir Wali visited our country on 8 January 2015 to address the 7th Ambassador’s Conference and met with Mevlüt Cavusoglu and accepted by the President of the Republic of Turkey.

Mr. President visited the Nigerians on 1-3 March 2016. During the visit, all aspects of bilateral relations were discussed at the joint and inter-office talks, and the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in the Field of Industry and Economic and Commercial Cooperation Memorandum was signed. Mr. President has also met our businessmen then made Turkey-Nigeria Business Forum on the occasion of the visit. Mrs. President of the Republic of Turkey, Mr Minister and minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Economy, National Defence and Environment and Urbanism were accompanied by our Ministers.

While President Bukhari was accompanied by his wife and a crowded delegation, he made an official visit to Ankara on October 19, 2017, and then attended the D-8 Summit held in Istanbul. The visiting President of the Republic of Turkey has made meetings with the President and the delegations. He also visited the Grand National Assembly of Turkey and came to the Assembly with the President of the Assembly. On October 18, 2017, they held bilateral talks with Nigerian opponents on the delegation of the guest president. President Bukhari went to Istanbul on October 20, 2017 and attended the 9th D-8 Summit.

Our trade and economic relations with Nigeria are developing. An important part of our bilateral trade with Nigeria is the LNG we import from Nigeria.

Bilateral trade volume of 2014 including import figures made by BOTAŞ is 2.483.7 million; The bilateral trade volume for the year 2015 was realized as US $ 1,144.9 million.

Excluding the import figures made by BOTAŞ, our bilateral trade volume was recorded as US $ 491.8 million, including 335.6 exports to our country and 156.2 million imports from our country in 2017.

Currently THY carries 7 direct flights per week to Lagos and Abuja.

Turkey covered by scholarships, since 1992 228 Nigerian students in undergraduate / postgraduate and doctoral scholarships were awarded. 43 Nigeria scholarship opportunities were provided in the 2017-18 academic year.

Our country, through the Turkish Cooperation and Development Agency (TIKA), is in development assistance to Nigeria in various fields.
