Turkey – Mexico Political Relations
Mexico, which we have established diplomatic relations with in 1927 by signing the Friendship Agreement, is one of our two strategic partners in the region and our second largest trading partner according to the year 2016. Mexico’s President Enrique Peña Nieto’s historic visit to Turkey on December 16-19, 2013 was the first visit between the two countries at this level. During the visit, a joint declaration was signed by the President of the Republic to bring the relations to a strategic level, a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two Foreign Ministries and the establishment of the Two Nations High Commission was initiated, negotiations for the Free Trade Agreement (HRA) Prevention Agreement (IVA),
Mr. President has made an official visit to Mexico on 11-12 February 2015 with our Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Economy, Culture and Tourism, Environment and Urbanism, Agriculture, Food and Livestock. During the visit, the two Presidents signed a Joint Political Declaration, a Declaration of Development Cooperation between the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Tourism and Tourism Cooperation between the Ministers of Culture and Tourism, and the Archaeology and Cultural Heritage Cooperation Agreement.
Mrs. Bakim has made an official visit to Mexico on 2-3 February 2017 in the context of Latin America tour. During the visit, TIKA’s Mexico Program Coordination Mr. Minister, who formally opened the office, Mexican Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray Caso realized with alone and delegations negotiations and Turkey-Mexico binational High-Level Commission has co-chaired the first political committee meeting. During the visit, the Two Nations High Commission also reached an agreement on the sub-committees on political, economic-trade, justice and home affairs, tourism / culture / science / In this context, the first meeting of the Culture, Education, Science and Development Cooperation Committee was held on 25 October 2017 in Ankara, is also hosted by our Ministry. In the coming period, our relations with Mexico are planned to be further deepened through the Two Nations High Commission and subcommittees.
Our commercial and economic relations with Mexico, our second largest trading partner after Brazil in the Latin American region, have gained momentum in recent years, according to data released in 2016. Our bilateral trade volume increased by 5% in 2016 to 1,265 billion USD. Negotiations for the signing of the STA between our country and Mexico are ongoing, and the seventh round of negotiations was held in April 2016.
Mexico is a member of the Union for Consensus Group, which includes our country, which advocates increasing the number of non-permanent members in the UN Security Council and improving the working methods of the Council. Importance is given to the development of our cooperation in Mexico and especially in multilateral platforms, such as the UN, G20 and MIKTA.
The Embassy of Mexico in our country, as well as Honorary Consulates in the cities of Veracruz, Cancun, Monterrey, Tijuana and Guadalajara. Mexico is the Turkish Embassy in our country, the Consulate General in Istanbul and the Honorary Consulates in Izmir and Mersin. The opening of the Honorary Consulate in Antalya and Kocaeli continues.
