Turkey – Maldives Political Relations
Diplomatic relations between our country and the Maldives were established in 1979. Our Embassy in New Delhi is accredited to the Maldives and the Maldives to the United Nations Permanent Mission to Geneva.
Turkey and the Maldives are two friendly countries with close cooperation in many international platforms, especially the United Nations and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
Mr. President, our Prime Minister during the 26 December 2004 following the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami in on 9 February 2005 visit to the Maldives between the two countries has been the first official visit made to the Maldives from Turkey since the establishment of diplomatic relations. Maldives Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid period 15 to 21 April 2008 in the top-level visit to the Maldives, which have made our country is the first official visit to Turkey.
In 2009, he worked in various capacities from Maldives to the Ministry of Transport, Transport and Environment. Mohamed Shareef, Minister of Defence and National Security Ameen Faisal, Minister of Economic Development Mohamed Rasheed and Minister of Education Dr. Musthafa Luhtfy visited our country. In May of the same year, Deputies under the chairmanship of Deputy Speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly Mr. Nevzat Pakdil visited the Maldives in a meeting with a businessman delegation of 30 people together.
Mr. President made a meeting with President Nasheed of Maldives in Abu Dhabi on January 18, 2010, during the period of Prime Ministers’ 3rd World Future Energy Summit. Opinions were exchanged on the development of bilateral relations, including cooperation in the fields of tourism and defence. Our minister and Maldivan Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon held bilateral talks in Kuwait at the margins of the 69th General Assembly in September 2014 and in the margins of the 42nd Foreign Ministers Meeting in New York and May 2015.
The Minister of Defence and National Security Ameen Faisal visited the Republic of Maldives on September 15-17, 2010 and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives Ahmed Naseem visited our country in May 2011 to attend the Fourth Conference on Least Developed Countries (EAGU) in Istanbul. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, Minister of Islamic Affairs of the Maldives, attended the presidential handover ceremony on 28 August 2014; Maldives Parliament Speaker Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed came to my country to attend the 10th Parliamentary Union of Islamic Cooperation Organization (ISIPAB) Conference held in Istanbul on 17-22 January 2015.
My last visit to Maldives from my country, Foreign Minister Dr. Mohamed Asim visited our country on 28-29 August 2017. Minister Asım, our minister bilateral and inter-office talks have been realized.
