Turkey-Germany Political and Economic Relations
The Ottoman Empire, which signed a peace and friendship agreement with the Kingdom of Prussia in 1790, He developed military relations with Germany during the period of Abdülhamit. Along with the alliance in the First World War, Germany and the Ottoman Empire cooperated with important investments such as the construction of the Baghdad railway at the time. Jews who left Germany in 1933 after Hitler, leftist, liberal German academics and engineers who have been invited to Turkey, the reorganization of these intellectuals, universities, industrial plants and has been a valuable contribution for the establishment of the company. During the Cold War, our commercial, economic and cultural relations with the Federal Republic continued intensively; 1960s following this period, with the Labour Agreement signed between Germany and Turkey,
Germany, one of our allies in Europe, has multi-faceted relationships with deep-rooted backgrounds, political, economic, military and human dimensions. Our relations are more complicated than in many other border countries. In addition to high-level reciprocal visits, contacts at the technical level are traditionally carried out regularly.
The first meeting held on January 22, 2016 the Turkey-Germany intergovernmental consultations at the level of Heads of Government of mechanisms are envisaged to be held alternately every two years. In addition, the second meeting of the Strategic Dialogue Mechanism (SDM) in Istanbul, which was established in Berlin in 2013 to run at the level of Foreign Ministers, is another platform for dialogue and cooperation.
At the Presidential level, lastly, AFC President Gauck made an official visit to my country on 26-29 April 2014.
Federal Chancellor Merkel that we hosted in our country on several occasions in recent years, finally realized a working visit to Ankara on 2 February 2017 in talks with the occasion of the visit, Turkey-Germany bilateral relations, terrorism and irregular migration challenges in the collaboration, Cyprus solution process, Turkey-EU relations, The developments in Syria and the Middle East and some other international and regional issues on the joint agenda of the two countries.
German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel made an official visit to my country on 5 June 2017. Minister Gabriel, as well as Mr Minister, was accepted by the President of the Republic of Turkey.
At the level of Foreign Ministers, AFC Federal Chancellor and Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel visited our country on 4 November 2017. Minister also met with German counterpart Sigmar Gabriel in Goslar, Germany, on 6 January 2018.
The fact that binary relations are so intertwined and versatile brings both opportunities and some tests. Attention is paid to keeping the dialogue channels open so that problems can be overcome, and relations normalized. About 3.4 million Turkish origin in Germany and Turkey is an important human dimension of our relationship with our people there. About 1,500,000 of these people are dual citizens. Turks have contributed to the social life and economic prosperity of Germany for many years. There are currently 1 member of the European Parliament from Turkey and 14 members of the Federal Parliament (Bundestag).
Germany is our country’s largest trading partner. Our trade volume with Germany in 2016 was $ 35.5 billion, up 2% from 2015 (2015: $ 34.8 billion). Of which $ 14 billion is exports and $ 21.5 billion is imports. By November 2017, our trade volume was $ 32 billion 933 million, an increase of 1.4% compared to the same period of the previous year.
