Turkey-Finland Political Relations
The Ottoman Empire did not recognize the independence of Finland, declared on December 6, 1917, in February 1918. Turkish-Fin political relations were established by the Friendship Agreement signed in 1924.
The two countries relations in 1999, Finland’s candidacy has gained momentum in Turkey’s EU membership to be recognized during the EU presidency. Finland is one of Turkey’s accession process to the European Union strongly supports countries.
On the other hand, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Turkey and Finland, in order to increase the efficiency and capacity of the UN to achieve peace “Mediation for Peace” has been spearheaded a joint venture under the name. As of December 2017, the number of members of the “Mediation Friendship Group”, which was established under the mentioned initiative, reached 56, including 48 countries and 8 international / regional organizations including the UN.
The President of Finland, Sauli Niinistö, made an official visit to my country on 13-15 October 2015, upon the invitation of Mr. President of Turkey. President Niinistö was accompanied by Minister of Economy Olli Rehn and businessmen in Istanbul on 14 October 2015 with the organization of variables “Turkey-Finland Business Forum” was held.
Finnish Foreign Minister Timo Soini, on 11 January 2017, I made a visit to my country under the Ambassadors Conference (BKON).
Our bilateral trade volume with Finland amounted to USD 1,234 billion in 2016. (Exports: 292 million; Import: USD 942 million) The main products exported to Finland are automobiles, stadium wagons, parts for land vehicles, polished or glazed tiles or paving slabs and paving stones. The main products we import from Finland are one / two-fold kaolin, inorganic coated paper, stainless steel flat products, propylene and other olefin polymers.
Currently operating in various fields in Turkey up to 80 F there are companies, around 200 Finnish company is also represented in Turkey. In Finland, there are 20 companies with Turkish entrepreneurship activity in various fields such as mining, bicycle and fitness equipment, electronic products, textiles and furniture. Nevertheless, the number of small Turkish businesses operating in the country especially in the lacquer industry is around 400.
The amount of direct investments from Finland to my country ranged from $ 365 million in 2002-2016. The direct investments made in Finland by residents in Turkey was 12 million US dollars in the same period.
The number of Fin tourists visiting our country is about 123 thousand in 2016.
Committee for Economic and Commercial Partnership between Turkey and Finland (eToken) Declaration on the Establishment, was signed in Ankara on February 4, 2015.
There are about 13,000 citizens living in Finland. As a result of the general elections held on April 19, 2015, a Turkish citizen of Fin (Ozan Yanar-Green Party) entered the national parliament.
