Turkey and Burundi Political Relations

Our embassy in Kampala in Burundi is accredited. Burundi’s Ankara Embassy opened in June 2014. The embassy opening process in Bujumbura, the capital city of our country’s Burundi, was launched in June 2017. In cooperation with the UN, IST organized in Istanbul on May 31-June 1, Burundi President Pierre Nkurunziza attended the Somali Conference in Istanbul.

Former Minister of External Relations and International Cooperation Laurent Kavakure attended the presidential handover ceremony held on August 28, 2014 in our country.

Burundi Minister for External Relations and International Cooperation Alain Aimé Nyamitwe visited the country on 13-16 June 2017. This visit was the first visit by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Burundi to my country. The agreement and the Memorandum of Understanding were signed in various fields with the visit.

Our bilateral trade volume was recorded as Burundi with US $ 1.9 million in 2016 (exports from Turkey: 1,866 million US dollars, Turkey imports: US $ 42,000).

Burundi, “Turkey Scholarships” are allocated within the scope of higher education scholarships. In 2016-2017 academic year, 24 Burundi citizens were granted scholarships.

Diplomats also participate in the annual “Young Diplomats Training Program” in Burundi, which has been held every year since 1992.
