Turkey – Burkina Faso Relations

In our bilateral relations with Burkina Faso (BF), the UN Security Council Interim Membership we made in 2009, the visit of the Vagadugu Embassy in January 2012 and the visit of the Ankara Embassy in February 2014 and recent visits and signing agreements.

Recent high-level visits to BP from my country are as follows:

Former President Blaise Compaoré, 18-21 August 2008 participated in the Turkey-Africa Cooperation Summit held in Istanbul. Compaoré made a bilateral meeting with the 11th President Abdullah Gül at the summit margin and found another visit to my country.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Cooperation, Bedouma Alain Yoda, visited Turkey on 15-17 February 2010 in the capacity of Co-President of KEK.

The Djibril Bassolé, Minister of State, Foreign Affairs and Regional Cooperation, visited our country on 8-10 May 2013. Djibril Bassolé of Burkina Faso during this visit and the agreement providing visa exemption for holders of diplomatic passports was signed between Turkey and entered into force the same year. Bassolé also made a visit to my country during the presidential handover ceremony on 28 August 2014.

Former Parliament Speaker Soungalo Appolinaire Ouattara made a visit to my country on 19-22 March 2014.

Prime Minister of the Transitional Government, Colonel Isaac Zida, who was formed to manage the country until the elections in 2015 following the resignation of President Compaoré on 31 October 2014, made a special visit to my country on 24-26 February 2015. Zida made an interview with Meral Akşener, the Deputy Speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly, during the visit.

Burkina Faso (BF) President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré attended the 13th Islamic Summit held in Istanbul on 14-15 April 2016 with a large delegation. On 11-12 July 2017, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mevlut Cavusoglu visited Burkina Faso on an official visit.

The Business Council further ensure the development of commercial activities between Turkey and BF has been envisaged. ECOWAS Business Forum in Turkey’s economy and history at the 22-23 February 2018 meeting in Istanbul Business Council Agreement was signed.

The largest Turkish investment to date in the country was made in the mining sector by MNG Gold (MNG ORKO Madencilik AS) company in 2015. The company bought two gold mine sites in the south of the country, Australian and Canadian firms, for $ 40 million.

Ankara-based “CEMTECH” is expected to set up a factory to produce 26 million euros cement raw materials and bricks.

Our country, through the Turkish Cooperation and Development Agency (TIKA), is in Burkina Faso development aids in various fields such as health, food, education, science and transportation.

Scholarships recognized by Turkey within the scope of Turkey, during the period 2017-2018 are given scholarships to 11 students from Burkina Faso. 67 scholarships have been awarded since 2012.
