Turkey – Azerbaijan Political Relations
Turkey was the first country to recognize the Republic of Azerbaijan declared its independence on August 30, 1991 November 9, 1991. Diplomatic relations were established on January 14, 1992 and our representative, who was serving as Consulate General in Baku, was raised to the level of the Embassy. In Azerbaijan we also operate Nakhichevan and Gence Consulate Generals. Azerbaijan has the Consulate-General in Ankara and the Consulate-General in Istanbul and Kars.
Turkey’s relations with Azerbaijan are multi-dimensional and strategic level. High-level mutual visits, which are intensive, are the most important driving force behind the relationships. The two countries have settled on a tradition that the state authorities should visit the other country firstly, either after they have come to the point of view or have developed symbolically important.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan visited our country on February 22, 2017 to participate in the conference organized by the Turkish Council for the 25th anniversary of the massacre of the Hocalı Massacre, and thus held a bilateral meeting with our minister. The Azerbaijani Parliament Speaker participated in the BSEC Summit held on May 22, 2017 in Istanbul. The President of Azerbaijan visited our country on 9-10 July 2017 to attend the 22nd World Petroleum Congress and 19-20 October 2017 to attend the D-8 Summit. President Aliyev finally visited our country on 13 December to participate in the OIC Extraordinary Summit.
In 2010, the mechanism of the High Level Strategic Cooperation Council (YDSK) at the level of the Presidents was established in order to strengthen the bilateral relations. Our country is striving for peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in the framework of territorial integrity and sovereignty of Azerbaijan. As a member of the OSCE Minsk Group, the OSCE continues its initiatives and calls on every occasion, particularly in April 2016, to call on its contacts and speeding up its concerns and negotiations in the face of violent conflicts and casualties in certain parts of the Azerbaijan-Armenian border.
