Turkey – Sri Lanka Political Relations
After Sri Lanka gained independence on 4 February 1948, our New Delhi Embassy was accredited to Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka’s Embassy in Tel Aviv has also served as accredited to Turkey.
Sri Lanka’s Ankara Embassy in 2012 and Colombo’s Embassy in 2013.
Turkey-Sri Lanka relations have remained in positive channels. Visits to Sri Lanka on February 10, 2005, within the framework of visiting programs for countries affected by the tsunami disaster that took place in the Indian Ocean on 26 December 2004 during the reign of President of Turkey, constituted a significant threshold for our bilateral relations.
The visit Sri Lanka President Rajapaksa’s visit to my country in 2008 was the first visit from Sri Lanka to my country at the level of President.
Rauff Hakeem, Minister of Urban Planning and Water Supply and the President of the Parliamentary Friendship Group, specifically appointed by Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe for the development of bilateral relations, made an official visit to my country on February 2-8, 2016.
Our minister’s visit to Sri Lanka on 14-15 June 2016 was the first visit to the country of our country at the level of Foreign Minister.
