Turkey – Sierra Leone Relations

Our relationship with Sierra Leone was established in 1971. Our Freetown Embassy was active on February 1, 2018. Abu Dhabi Embassy of Sierra Leone accredited to Turkey. Sierra Leone is expected to open a resident Embassy in Ankara in the coming period.

Transformation Sierra Leone President Ernest Bai Koroma, 25th Anniversary of COMCEC Summit (November 2009); Period of Vice President Samuel Sam-Sumana, First Turkey-Africa Cooperation Summit (August 2008); Period of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Dauda Josheph UN IV EAGA Summit (May 2011) and Turkey-Africa Partnership Ministerial Level I. Review Conference (December 2011) visited our country on the occasion.

On the occasion of the Palestinian Islamic Cooperation Organization (OIC) Extraordinary Summit held on 6-7 March 2016, Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmuş held a bilateral meeting with Sierra Leone Foreign and International Cooperation Minister Samura Kamara on the request.

Sierra Leone Foreign Minister Kamara, who visited our country to attend the 13th Islamic Summit held in Istanbul between 14-15 April 2016, made a bilateral meeting with Minister at the Kamara summit margin.

At the World Humanitarian Summit held in Istanbul on May 24-25, 2016, when our country was hosted, a delegation represented Sierra Leone under the chairmanship of State Minister Isata B. Kabia. The Transformation Sierra Leone Kamara, Foreign and International Cooperation Minister, attended the High Level Comprehensive Interim Review Meeting of the Istanbul Action Program for the Least Developed Countries (EAGU) held in Antalya on 27-29 May 2016.

Sierra Leone wanted to include our country in the Sierra Leone configuration of the Commission for Peacebuilding, which was established under the UNSC Resolution 1645 (2005). For this purpose, our country became a member of this Constitution in April 2012,

Conversation Sierra Leone President Ernest Bai Koroma has made an official visit to my country on May 9-11, 2017, with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Energy, Finance, Mineral and Mineral Resources, Education, Youth and Sports, Information and Communications. The visit, from Sierra Leone became the first official visit made at the level of Heads of State in Turkey. At the same time, President Koroma, during the period of Sierra Leone’s Defence Ministry, also attended the opening ceremony of IDEF-2017 on 9 May 2017.

The trade volume between Turkey and Sierra Leone have been USD 51.5 million in 2017. Sierra Leone imports mainly grain, iron / steel, food products, while Sierra Leone imports scrap ship, titanium and leather products.

The Commercial, Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement signed in October 2012 has been approved by our country. The Mechanism of the Joint Economic Commission will also come to life with the agreement entering into force following the ratification by Sierra Leone.

A total of 11 tons of humanitarian aid material consisting of various food, cleaning materials and tents were delivered by the Turkish Red Crescent on August 17 after flood disaster and landslide in Sierra Leone on 14 August 2017.

Our country, through Turkish Agency for Cooperation and Development (TIKA), is in Sierra Leone development aids in various fields such as health, food and education.

Sierra Leone Minister of Transport and Aviation visited Istanbul with a delegation from 30 October to 4 November 2017, accompanied by the invitation of THY.

THY conducts Istanbul-Freetown flights twice a week as of 24 February 2018.

Bursa Turkey within the scope of Sierra Leone since 1992 between the citizens of our country by undergraduate, graduate and has been awarded 47 scholarships for doctoral studies. Five scholarships were awarded to Sierra Leone citizens for the 2017-2018 academic year.

Five students from Sierra Leone benefited from religious education high school scholarships provided by the Presidency of Religious Affairs in 2017-2018 education year.
