Turkey – Iranian Political Relations
Iran is an important neighbour with whom we share an unchanging 560 km border, nearly 400 years old. In Iran we are currently working at the Embassy of Tehran as well as the Consulate General of Tabriz, Urumiye and Mashhad. Iran is represented in our country with the Embassy of Ankara as well as the Consulates in Istanbul, Erzurum and Trabzon.
It is aimed to develop our bilateral relations with Iran on the grounds of not interfering with their internal affairs, mutual respect and good neighbourhood principles. Efforts are being made to promote political dialogue and bilateral relations at all levels and in regional issues, especially with high-level visits held in mutual contact.
The Council of Higher-Level Cooperation, which was set up during the visit of Iran in January 2014, when President was the Prime Minister, established an institutional framework for our relations. Iran-Turkey High Level Cooperation Council meeting on the occasion of the first visit to our country, Iranian President Hasan Spiritual 9 June 2014 in Ankara; The second meeting was held on April 7, 2015 in Tehran during the visit of Mr. President of Iran to Iran; the third meeting was held in Ankara with the visit of President Ruhani to our country on 16 April 2016; The fourth and last meeting was held in Tehran on October 4, 2017, with the visit of Mr. President of Iran to Iran. Iranian President Dr. Hasan Ruhani visited our country to attend the OIC Extraordinary Islamic Summit on Jerusalem on 13 December 2017 in Istanbul and held a bilateral meeting with Mr. President.
First Deputy Iranian President Ishak Cihangiri made an official visit to Ankara on October 19, 2017, upon the invitation of Prime Minister. Following the Ankara meetings, Cihangir participated in the D-8 Summit in Istanbul on 20 October 2017 and was accepted by the President of the Republic of Turkey. The last visit to Iran at the prime ministerial level was the visit to Tehran on 4-5 March 2016 upon the official invitation of Prime Minister Davutoglu, First Deputy Iranian President Ishak Cihangiri. Finally, at the level of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Foreign Affairs Cevad Zarif made a dual visit to my country on June 7, 2017 and our minister visited Iran on 26 November 2016.
On the other hand, cooperation between border security, terrorism and combating organized crime has also started to take place on the joint agenda of both countries, thanks to the visits of the Chief of General Staff to Iran and the visits of Iranian Minister of Interior Affairs.
